Spotlight on Academics

The Power of Nightly Reading
Did you know that a simple nightly reading routine can dramatically grow a child’s vocabulary and support academic success? Research shows that children who are read to regularly hear hundreds of thousands — even millions — more words before kindergarten than those who are not. This extra exposure to language helps build stronger vocabulary, comprehension, and literacy skills.
What the Research Shows
  • The “Million-Word Gap”: Children who are read five books a day may enter kindergarten having heard 1.4 million more words than children who are never read to.
  • Even One Book Helps: Reading just one book per day can expose a child to 290,000 more words by age 5.
  • 20 Minutes a Day Matters: Students who read 20 minutes daily are exposed to nearly 1.8 million words each year, placing them among the highest levels of reading achievement.
  • Benefits Continue into the Teen Years: Teenagers who read for pleasure every day understand 26% more words than teens who do not read regularly.
Why Nightly Reading Makes a Difference
  • Richer Vocabulary – Books introduce children to complex and uncommon words that aren’t typically heard in everyday conversation.
  • Better Memory – Reading in the evening, close to bedtime, can help children remember new words and ideas more effectively.
  • Academic Growth – Consistent reading improves literacy, strengthens writing skills, and helps prepare children for long-term academic success.
A Simple Habit with Big Results
Just 20 minutes of reading each night can make a lasting difference in your child’s language development and love of learning. Whether it’s a bedtime story, a favorite chapter book, or reading together as a family, those moments add up to powerful learning.
Let’s keep growing readers—one story at a time!

Safe and Civil School Survey

We invite you to participate in the Safe and Civil Schools survey during the week of March 23rd-27th. The survey will help us identify what we are doing well and what we need to work on, such as safety in a particular location in the school, learners’ understanding of the expectations for behavior, or communication with families.

Please review the District Letter here.

Staff Member of the Week

Staff members have the opportunity to recognize their peers for their contributions and dedication. We celebrated Mrs. Lutz and Ms. Haley during morning announcements this past week. We extend our sincere thanks to Texas Roadhouse for providing certificates and meal coupons for these individuals.

PTO Reminders

Our next PTO Meeting is Tuesday, April 7, 2026 at 6:30 PM in the Blue Ball Conference Room. A virtual link will be sent prior to the meeting for those unable to attend in person.

All PTO officer positions — President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer — will be open for the 2026–2027 school year. Nominations are still being accepted, with elections to be held at the April meeting.

PTO is looking for new faces and fresh ideas, especially kindergarten and first grade parents who are ready to get involved and grow with our school community. Attending a PTO meeting is a great way to learn how you can help and what each role involves.
Please note: Without volunteers to fill these positions, we will not have a PTO, which means programs such as field trips, RIF books, teacher appreciation, family nights, and more would not be possible.
Your involvement truly makes a difference—please consider stepping up or nominating someone today! If you have questions or would like to make a nomination for yourself or someone else please email us at blueballpto1@gmail.com.

The Blue Ball PTO Gertrude Hawk Spring Fundraiser pick-up will being during Parent-Teacher Conferences.

Excellence in Attendance

We are grateful to our families for sharing your children each day as we grow and learn together. When students attend school consistently, they not only strengthen essential skills in reading, writing, and math, but also benefit from collaboration with peers—sharing ideas, building teamwork, and forming lasting friendships. Being together nurtures social development and fosters a sense of belonging that enriches the learning experience. When everyone is present, we grow stronger, more confident, and better prepared for success—together.

Congratulations to our Pizza Winners. These learners have 95% or better attendance. Our thanks to DiMaria's Pizza and Italian Kitchen for their support of our school community.
